Oahu, Hawaii may be an island, but that doesn’t mean it lacks in the hustle and bustle of city life. In my opinion, Oahu is like a tropical version of LA – but with tanner people. With pristine beaches, amazing surf, high rise hotels, and tons of Polynesian history it’s no wonder 4.5 million people flock to this island every year.
Being cooped up in a cruise boat for 4 days (yes, 4 long boring sea days)… a beach day was a must! Honestly, anything to do with land was a must! Soon after getting off the boat, my family and I rented a car that would take us to our destination—Lanikai Beach. It is about a 35 minute drive from the port.
Before soaking our toes in some tropical ocean, my older sister Kyra, wanted us to take a quick detour to Lanikai Pillbox Trail. (Don’t know what a pillbox is? It is an armory for canons to defend the coastline during World War I. It’s not a box filled with your daily vitamins.) This trail has been all the hype on Instagram and has become very popular for tourists due to its stunning views of Lanikai Beach.
Once you hit the entrance of the trail, you’ll see that the pillbox is located at the top of the hill. To get to the pillbox it’s about a 30 minute trek up from the starting point. With that said, I do not recommend this hike to anyone that doesn’t like to break a sweat (aka my Mom) or anyone who is dumb enough to wear gladiator shoes (aka me). Incline hikes and I definitely do not mix, however I’ll do them just to see the amazing views at the end.
Unfortunately, my family and I didn’t get all the way up to the pillbox (we can thank my cranky 3 year old nephew for that). However, even though we were unable to finish it, we were still able to see the view of Lanikai — just at a different elevation. Vibrant turquoise coastline, mile high palm trees, and lush Hawaiian vegetation surround you as you travel up the trail. After seeing nothing but ocean water for the last 4 days, this view was definitely a sight for sore eyes!
Once we took in the breathtaking view, the inescapable heat started to sway our decision to hit the beach! Lanikai Beach is only a 2 minute drive from the Pillbox trail. Who doesn’t love convenience!?
The word “paradise” could hardly describe the beauty of this beach. Once you travel through the beach entrance, it opens up to the most inviting turquoise clear water, swaying palm trees and sandy coastline.
Since this beach is considered to be a local spot for residents, it’s able to remain a hidden gem that feels unspoiled and less touristy. Honestly, if you were to give me a tent, wifi, and lifetime supply of teriyaki beef jerky (my fav)… I would’ve been quite happy spending the rest of my days there!
Lanikai beach is a must do if you are looking to spend a beach day in Oahu soaking up some Vitamin Sea and D!
